DISCOVERY BIBLE STUDY

A simple approach to understanding the Bible

What is DBS?

DBS stands for Discovery Bible Study, which is a simple approach for reading and understanding the Holy Bible with an emphasis on learning by doing over comprehending concepts only. This way of interacting with the Bible is ideal for people who are encountering it for the first time, who or are very early in their journey in learning about and following Jesus.

In DBS groups there is no human teacher. Instead we rely on God to guide us to understand three basic but important ideas:

  1. What is God trying to say to us in this part of the Bible?
  2. What do we discover about God, God’s plan, and people (ourselves) from what we read?
  3. If those things are true, how will I let that change my life this week?
We believe that engaging with God's Word in this way is refreshing, empowering and life-giving. As such, when we meet together, toward the end of each meeting we will ask something along the lines of, “Who can you share this with?” or, “Who would you like to invite to join us next week?” The point of this is that we truly believe that the message of the Bible is good news that people would want to share with others. Or, as one of our friends likes to say, “Everyone knows someone who is curious about Jesus.” If what we are reading, learning, and doing is the truth, we would want to share that with others.

What to Expect on Sunday Mornings

Our DBS groups will meet on Sunday mornings at Grace Chapel at 10:30 a.m., following our church's worship service. We will meet in the fellowship hall, while various other classes will also be meeting throughout the church building. We will be seated in groups around tables. The ideal group size is 6-8 people. There is a component of asking about the commitments made in previous meetings, so participants are encouraged to sit with the same people each week.

When you arrive, you will come to a fairly busy lobby. Hopefully you’ll see a lot of smiling faces. Some people will be leaving, others will be heading to a class, and still others will be hanging out, sipping coffee, and chatting it up.

If you need help finding the fellowship hall (where we meet), restrooms, coffee, etc., you can visit our “Guest Connection Desk,” or ask one of our members wearing an orange lanyard with a badge that says “Host Team.” They'll be happy to assist you!

The easy answer is, just bring yourself. But...
  • If you have a Bible that you like to use and is easy for you to read/understand, bring that.
  • A notebook and writing utencil may be useful.
  • Feel free to bring a friend, family member, co-worker, or anyone else you know who might be interested in learning more about discovering God and His plan as laid out in the Bible.

The Discovery Bible Study is for everyone--almost. You are more than welcome to keep your children with you, and they are more than welcome to join in on the Bible study.

If you prefer not to keep them with you, we have a host of Bible classes available for children through 5th grade in the opposite wing of the church building. Each class is led by a team of highly capable, experienced teachers, as well as younger volunteers who act as teacher's assistants. Simply stop by our children's area desk to fill out some basic information to check in, and our volunteers will show you where to bring your children and when/where to pick them up.

For kids in middle or high school, we have a youth class that meets in our Youth Room (adjacent to the Fellowship Hall). This class is led and facilitated by our youth minister, Rocky Wyatt, and various members of the youth group.

Our volunteers are all carefully screened, and we have background checks on file for each of them. Child safety is important to us! Before we are an organization, we are a family, a church full of parents and grandparents.
